M35 High-Speed Steel (HSS): A Cobalt-Alloyed General-Purpose Tool Steel
M35 High-Speed Steel (HSS) is a cobalt-alloyed, general-purpose high-speed tool steel, widely used in high-performance cutting applications. It's an enhancement of the standard M2 HSS, with the addition of cobalt (Co) to significantly improve the material's hot hardness (ability to retain hardness at high temperatures) and wear resistance.

1. Core Performance Characteristics

High Hardness & Hot Hardness: After heat treatment, hardness typically reaches HRC 64-67. Due to the cobalt content, it maintains high hardness during continuous cutting at elevated temperatures (above ~600°C), effectively extending tool life.

Excellent Cutting Performance: Compared to conventional HSS, M35 offers superior capability for machining hard metals like stainless steel and alloy steels.

Good Toughness: Despite its high hardness, its toughness and transverse rupture strength are comparable to standard HSS, allowing it to withstand significant impact loads.

2. Main Applications

M35 steel is mainly used for manufacturing complex cutting tools that require high efficiency and long life, including:

Drilling Tools: Such as cobalt-alloy twist drills, particularly suitable for drilling difficult-to-machine materials like stainless steel.

Gear Machining Tools: Such as hobs, broaches, and gear shapers (shaper cutters).

Milling & Threading Tools: Such as end mills, taps, and reamers.

Cold Work Dies: Also used in stamping and cold extrusion dies that demand high wear resistance.

Technical Information

M35 is a cobalt-bearing (5% Co) high-speed steel (HSS) with corresponding grades in various national standards. The Chinese designation is W6Mo5Cr4V2Co5 (or W6Co5). It corresponds to SKH55/YXM4 in Japan, 1.3243/S6525 in Germany, and HS6-5-2-5 in Europe. It is primarily used to manufacture high-end cutting tools requiring high hardness, superior wear resistance, and excellent red hardness, such as taps, milling cutters, and drill bits.
